HORTICULTURAL & OUTINGS
Our Open Meeting held on Monday 30th April in the Residents' Tennis Pavilion was attended by 27 people. The business side of things took half-an-hour and we were soon able to sample the very tasty finger buffet which John and Margaret Kempson had prepared, first savoury and then followed by a range of sweet offerings. It was a very enjoyable social occasion and the evening ended with the drawing of the raffle which was very generously supported and run by Jean Clay; and the only rain was a light shower when we started to leave for home.
Wednesday 13th June. Outing to Stockbridge & Mottisfont Abbey Rose Gardens
At the time of writing there are 10 seats still available on the coach for our first trip in 2012 to visit these gardens which are famous for their collection of old-fashioned roses that should be at their best in mid-June. The coach will leave the Grand Drive/Greenway bus stop at 9.15am, stopping at Raynes Park Station, Approach Road bus stop at 9.20am and also picking up at the bus stop opposite the Earl Beatty pub. In Motspur Park at 9.30am. There will be a 2-hour stop for people to find refreshment at Stockbridge which we should reach by 11.30am. There is a wide choice of pubs and cafes along the pretty High Street.
We will move on to Mottisfont at 1.30pm. There is the Abbey to visit, the Gardens beside the River Test to see, a cafe, an Ice Cream Parlour, a gift shop and a 2nd hand book shop. Also a photographic exhibition. The trip home will start at 5pm. Cost for National Trust members is £12.50 (please remember to bring your NT membership card). This covers coach hire and driver's tip. The cost is £20.50 for those not holding National Trust membership to cover entrance to the property.
Sunday 17th June. 2.30 - 4pm. Visit to Wood lark Nurseries, Burhill Rd, Hersham
This is normally wholesale-only, but it is being opened for Surrey Federation societies. There will be plenty of plants to buy, plus hanging baskets and containers. This trip will be by car. If anyone is interested please contact me.
Wednesday 22nd August Outing to Midhurst & the Weald & Downland Museum.
Timings for this outing are the same as above and we have chosen Midhurst for our refreshment stop. Those who watch BBC Antiques Roadshow may have seen the Museum featured recently. It is at Singleton near Goodwood and has a unique collection of ancient farm buildings and there are demonstrations of the changing way of life in the countryside over the past 600 years. It has an excellent cafeteria. Cost of this trip will be £19.50 Bookings for both these outings should be made with Margaret Barrett (Tel 8949 4304) or Edna Gumbrell (Tel 8542 5811).
Friday 7th September. Visit to Wisley during the RHS Late Summer Show.
Details of this will be published next month, but put the date in your diary.
